Tai Ping — Collection Overview
The Overview collection, inspired by childhood landscapes of Los Angeles, also pays homage to the history of the Tai Ping brand, which in 1958 was commissioned to create a rug for the iconic Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Los Angeles.
Comprising five original designs executed in six hand-tufted rugs, Overview invites us on a nostalgic journey through the City of Angels. At the heart of the collection, the designs Mulholland I and Mulholland II capture the essence at night and at sunset, of the avenue that inspired David Lynch and along which the designer’s family often drove after Sunday screenings at Grauman’s Chinese Theater.
The collection’s meticulous craftsmanship is evident in its treatment of light and depth. Arroyo Seco I, for example, features flat tints of powdered pinks accentuated by luminous touches of lurex, evoking the delicate interplay of light at dusk. Similarly, DTLA I showcases intricate carving and sculpting to create a dynamic cityscape of light and shadow.
Evoking vibrant and contrasting cartographies, Cienega I and WEHO I reinterpret the roads and landscapes of Los Angeles, offering a creative nod to West Hollywood, the city’s design epicenter. Through its thoughtful designs and exceptional artistry, the Overview collection seamlessly translates the spirit of Los Angeles into luxurious carpet art.
